Remmebering the Top Dogs in 2013

BY THE narrowest of margins, Top Dog 2013 in the Dog World/Arden Grange table is the Standard Poodle Ch/Am Ch Afterglow Maverick Sabre.
‘Ricky’ came into his own during the second half of the year, and with several breed club wins and best in show at the British Utility Breeds he moved ahead of his nearest rival, the Wire Fox Terrier Ch Travella Striking Steel.
This just left the final show of the year, the Ladies’ Kennel Association, but this was held the same weekend as the Eukanuba World Challenge in Florida, for which Ricky had qualified by winning the Eukanuba champion stakes final.
His owners opted to show him in the US. Had the Wire won BIS at the LKA, the two dogs would have ended up in equal top place, something which has never happened in the history of the competition. As it was, the terrier won the group but the final decision of the year’s championship show season decided the issue when he ended up reserve BIS, thus two points behind the Poodle in the rankings.

Plenty to celebrate

Ricky was bred by Mike Gadsby and Jason Lynn, by BIS winner Ch/Am Ch Del Zarzoso Salvame from Afterglow (top utility 2011 and now winning well in the US) ex Ch Topcatana Sugar Cube Afterglow. Both parents are by Ch/Am Ch Afterglow Sugar Daddy, himself a son of Ch/Am Ch Afterglow The Big Tease who was Top Dog all breeds 2008.
In fact this is the fourth Top Dog bred or owned by Mike, having previously won with the American Cocker Spaniels Sh Ch Boduf Pistols At Dawn with Afterglow and Sh Ch Afterglow Douglas Fashion. This one, however, is shown mainly by Jason, who was born in the US and joined the Afterglow team in the mid 2000s.
The kennel had plenty more to celebrate during the year, topping the 100 UK champion mark covering 18 breeds, and has now been involved with 13 all-breeds BIS winners.
Ricky is co-owned by Jason with John and Sandra Stone who have been associated with a number of Afterglow Poodle winners over the years.
Born in September 2011, Ricky qualified for the Pup of the Year final during 2012 and gained his title at 14 months. At the POTY he reached the final few; it was won by his kennelmate the American Cocker Sh Ch Afterglow Dragon Quest.
His first group came at the National (judge Luis Pinto Teixeira) and he went on to RBIS behind the Wire under Kari Wilberg. Mark Cocozza gave him the group at Blackpool, Rodney Oldham at Windsor and Jeff Horswell at Paignton
At Bournemouth he won his first BIS under Bill Browne-Cole, breeder of his nearest rival, having won the group under Jeff Luscott.
He was RBIS at City of Birmingham (group judge Derek Smith, BIS judge Ronnie Irving), BIS at Richmond (Stuart Mallard and Liz Cartledge), Driffield (Dave Killilea and Robin Searle), Belfast (Steve Hall and Rodney Oldham) and South Wales (Jackie Kitchener and Peter Bailey) and reserve at Midland Counties (judge for both Tom Mather). His last group of the year came at BUBA on Ferelith Somerfield’s final appointment.
Steve Hall and Patsy Hollings put him up at the champion stakes final, meaning that the kennel accounted for both the main stakes finals of the year.
Ricky also paid a visit to the Poodle Club of America specialty where he was best of winners, and completed his US title at the shows held on the same weekend as the World Challenge.
In all he took 15 CCs, all with BOB, 12 groups including BUBA, two group 2, four group 3, three RBIS and five all-breeds BIS during 2013.

VERY CLOSE runner-up in the Top Dog table was the Wire Fox Terrier Ch Travella Striking Steel. He does have the consolation of being only the second dog ever to win eight UK all-breeds best in show awards during a single show season, the first being the Chinese Crested Ch Vanitonia Unwrapped, and his ratio of BIS wins to appearances in the ring can seldom if ever have been matched.
In a numerically small breed in the show ring, he has fewer opportunities than some of his rivals to win CCs, and indeed he has often won through from the unclassified classes.
He was bred by Bill Browne-Cole and comes from a kennel and strain which has been at or near the top for the entire post-war period. Bill’s father Bill (Senior) made many champions and won a BIS, and in recent years the kennel has enjoyed a spectacular run, ‘Oliver’ being the fifth BIS winner of the new era. All have been handled by Richard Allen and this one is owned by Bill’s wife Sue.
He is by BIS winner Ch Travella Starlord, now in South America, ex Travella Scarlet Rose, and the pedigree is almost entirely Travella for many generations.
Oliver was held back until he was almost two years old and emerged at WELKS where he topped the group under Roger Thomas. At his next show, the first time with breed classes, he won the group at the National under Dan Ericsson and BIS from Kari Wilberg. Scottish Kennel Club saw him win the group under Sue McCourt and BIS (Pam Blay) and at Southern Counties Eileen Needham gave him the group.
He was BIS at Border Union (group and BIS judge Ronnie Irving) and took his fourth such win at Blackpool (Peter Bakewell and Martin Freeman), becoming a champion on the day.
Another BIS win followed at Leeds (Brian Rodgers and Albert Wight) and he was reserve at Paignton (Patsy Hollings and Jeff Luscott), Welsh KC saw another BIS (Les Aspin and Valerie Foss) and he won again at Scottish KC (Stuart Plane and Freda Marshall), meaning he was unbeaten at the three Scottish shows.
At Driffield Lesley Crawley gave him the group, and at Belfast he was RBIS (Tom Johnston and Rodney Oldham) as he was again at South Wales (Martin Phillips and Peter Bailey), his nemesis on both occasions being Ricky the Standard Poodle, but he turned the tables for his eighth BIS at Midland Counties (Jeff Luscott and Tom Mather), ending the year with his fourth reserve at LKA (Frank Kane).

In third place, and leading the pastoral group for the second year, is the Australian Shepherd bitch Ch Allmark Fifth Avenue. She led the rankings for the first half of the year.
‘Tiffany’ is owned by Neil Allan and Robert Harlow who bred her with Neil’s wife Angie who is the handler. They previously campaigned another Aussie to the top pastoral award, Ch/Am Ch Heatherhill Shock N Awe, and Angie has owned several big-winning Old English Sheepdogs.
Her dam is the group winner Ch Allmark Careless Whisper, who spent a month in the US where she was mated to Am/Braz Ch Dazzle’s Bill-A-Bing Bill-A-Bong. The resulting litter included two other champions, both with 2013 group places, and a CC winner as well as Tiffany.
In 2011 she won four CCs and was top Aussie even through still too young to claim her title.
Her first group win came at WELKS 2012 from Robin Searle, followed by Windsor (Michael Quinney), Welsh KC (Rodney Oldham, and RBIS, Espen Engh) and Working and Pastoral Breeds Association of Scotland where Jan Rual took her on to BIS.
In 2013 she won the goup at Crufts from Jeff Luscott and was BIS at the Welsh W/P Breeds (Derek Smith). Her first all-breed BIS came at WELKS (Albert Wight and Jane Lilley) and she was reserve at Three Counties (Sue Hewart-Chambers and Patsy Hollings).
A second BIS was hers at Paignton (Stuart Mallard and Jeff Luscott) and she won the group at Richmond (Britt-Marie Young).
In fourth place is the Airedale Terrier Ch Katherina’s Land Spicy Cherry at Saredon, owned by Judy Averis, whose kennel has produced so many leading terriers, and Tony Barker whose Irvonhill kennel has also campaigned several leading terriers in recent years, including some top winning Irish – indeed the team also showed a BIS-winning Irish this year. Handler is Judy’s son John.
‘Keera’ was bred in Estonia, just one example of the rise of the eastern European nations in producing internationally competitive dogs.  Her breeder is Ekaterina Kantievskaya who mated her Int/Est/Rom/Lit/Fin/Rus Ch Katherina’s Land One Cherry Again to Ch/Dan/Lat Est/Norw/Rus Ch Saredon American Gangster, bred by Judy and conceived in the US. He spent some time in Russia.
Quite unexpectedly Ekaterina brought over to England two bitch puppies from the litter for Judy, and one gained her title at the end of 2012. Keera was held back until National Terrier where she made a dramatic debut by going BIS first time out, judge Jane Miller.
Judy had been supposed to judge another breed at the show; in the event she didn’t as she had been ill, but the Kennel Club decided to disqualify Keera from this prestigious win, one which the team has had three times previously.
In the event this did not make any difference to her position in the table, and her later successes include the group at Bath (Andrew Westwood), Three Counties (Don Munro), Bournemouth (Zena Thorn-Andrews), Richmond (Harry O’Donoghue) and Darlington (Andrew Hunt).

As if the previously listed achievements for Afterglow during 2013 were not enough, the kennel was also responsible for the year’s leading gundog, who is in fifth place overall. Is this the first time the same kennel has bred and co-owned two of the year’s group leaders?
The American Cocker Spaniel Sh Ch Afterglow Pearl’s A Singer was bred, as was the Top Dog Poodle, by Mike Gadsby and Jason Lynn, and is by Sh Ch Afterglow Trinidad, sire also of the Pup of the Year winner, ex the Japanese import Sh Ch/Jap Ch Nereid JP Mele Kalikimaka who won a BIS on her British debut.
She is co-owned by Jason with her handler Susan Crummey, who has been involved with the show scene since her junior handling days and has made up several Afterglow Americans plus a Toy Poodle.
Pearl won six CCs and two group places in 2012, and her first group plus RBIS came at WELKS ‘13 (Ron James and Jane Lilley). She repeated this at Scottish KC (Kari Wilberg and Pam Blay) and reached the top spot at Three Counties (group and BIS judge Patsy Hollings).
More reserves followed at Border Union (Pam Blay and Ronnie Irving) and Welsh KC (Clive Davies and Valerie Foss) before her second BIS at Darlington (Keith Young and Anne Macdonald). David Shields gave her the group at South Wales.
The toy group has resulted in a tie for top place. One of the pair is the Chinese Crested Ch Debrita Diaz, bred and owned by Tina Dixon, who has produced champions in a number of breeds, and handled by her daughter Dawn.
She is by Ch Habiba Shake Wiggle Wiggle ex Ch Debrita Danita.
She won five CCs while still a puppy in 2011 and her first group win came at Bath 2012 under Sonya Saxby. During 2013 she won no fewer than 20 CCs, plus groups at Windsor (George Farmer) and Darlington under Bert Easdon, the handler of her main rival.
‘Mia’ also took the breed CC record, formerly held by her grandsire and before that by an ancestor from her own kennel.

The other joint leader also achieved his breed CC record during the year – the Pekingese Ch Yakee Ooh Aah Cantona, who was outright top toy in 2012.  As a member of a high profile breed, he remains probably the most frequently veterinary-checked dog of any breed!
‘Eric’ was bred by Bert Easdon and Philip Martin, owned through most of his career by Philip and usually handled by Bert, occasionally by Sean Corrigan. He is by the successful sire Ch Livanda Santana ex Ch Yakee Of Noble Birth, a daughter of Ch Yakee A Dangerous Liaison who was Top Dog all breeds and BIS at Crufts.
His first two CCs came from puppy in 2010, and in 2011 took group wins at Welsh Kennel Club (Irene McManus, plus RBIS, Liz Cartledge), Darlington (Val Blore) and Belfast (Clare Coxall).
In 2012 group wins came at Manchester (Geoffrey Davies), Southern Counties (Howard Ogden), and Three Counties (Bill Browne-Cole) where Ferelith Somerfield made him the fourth Yakee Peke to win an all-breeds BIS in the UK.
Tom Mather gave him the group at Leeds, Carolyn Roe at Paignton and Brenda Taylor at City of Birmingham where he was Valerie Foss’ choice as BIS. Further group wins came at South Wales (Peter Green) and Midland Counties (Ann Ingram).
Four groups came in 2013: WELKS (Sonya Saxby), Three Counties (Howard Ogden), Border Union (Jackie Leslie) and Leeds (Peter Jolley, plus RBIS,  Albert Wight).
Two of his daughters won CCs during the year.

A few points behind is another toy dog, the King Charles Spaniel Ch Maibee Theo, who made history by become the first of the breed to take a UK general championship show BIS since 1929! Like the Peke, he was also in the top ten in 2012.
He was bred by the late Shealagh Waters, who also produced many Cavalier champions, and Joyce Robins, and since Shealagh’s death he has been campaigned in the names of her husband Bill Moffatt and Joyce, handled by Tanya Ireland.
By Maibee Teddy, who also won a group place in 2013, ex Maibee Sweet Memory, he gained his title in 2010 and took his first group win in 2011 at City of Birmingham under Dan Ericsson. In 2012 came further group wins at Blackpool (Betty Flavell), where he could not compete for BIS as only the first day’s judging took place, and Driffield (Sue Terry).
Another piece of breed history was made when he won the group at Crufts 2013 under Liz Cartledge, followed by wins at Bath (Irene McManus), East of England (Annette Oliver, where Dan Ericsson gave him the momentous BIS) and Paignton (Geoffrey Davies).
A daughter gained her title during the year.

Two gundogs share joint ninth place. The Pointer Sh Ch Wilchrimane Ice Maiden is owned and bred by Annette Siddle and handled by her daughter Amelia, a former successful junior handler. ‘Flo’ is by Wilchrimane Black Ice ex Pipeaway Diamond Tulip.
She qualified for the Pup of the Year final along with her sister who also gained her title. Two group wins came in 2012, at Darlington (Frank Kane) and South Wales (Fiona Coward-Scholes), and six in 2013, at Boston (Valerie Foss), Blackpool (Meriel Hathaway, plus RBIS, Martin Freeman), Leeds (Sharon Pinkerton), Paignton (Anne Webster), Scottish KC (Jock Mackay) and LKA (Frank Kane).
Along the way she has had a number of other exciting wins including the Young Kennel Club stakes final, the Junior Warrant final and the Contest of Champions. She and Amelia also played a big part in the success of Jilly’s Jaunt.

On equal points is the Welsh Springer Spaniel Sh Ch Ferndel Aeron Magregor, the latest in a line of titleholders bred and owned by John Thirlwell. He is by Sh Ch/Sw Ch Menstonia Marcel ex Sh Ch Ferndel Mosaic around Magregor, a daughter of all-time top brood bitch Sh Ch Ferndel Cecilia.
He took his first CC in 2010, his title and a group place in ‘11, a group win at Windsor ‘12 (Ann Moss), and more groups this year at Manchester (Becky Johnson), Windsor (Carole Coode, following the disqualification of the original winner) and Gundog Society of Wales (Sandra Marshall).
A son won two CCs during the year.

For the second year running, top working is the imported Bouvier des Flandres Ch/Dutch Ch I’m Special Inessence Movado at Kanix, bred by Pat Murray in the US and jointly owned with her by UK breeders Fiona Lambert (Kanix) and Janet Hughes (Alsadie). He is by Am Ch I’m Special Every Move I Make ex Norwegian-bred Am Ch Praxtar’s Jenni.
He has been handled by Dave Killilea who has campaigned so many Redwitch Akitas to top wins.
By the time he gained his UK title in 2011 he had already won three groups at WELKS (Zena Thorn-Andrews), Three Counties (Peter Jolley) and Blackpool (Gordon Rual), and more followed at Welsh KC (Liz Cartledge), Richmond (Tom Johnston), Darlington (Richard Kinsey) and Midland Counties (Stuart Mallard).
Next came Manchester 2012 (Sue Garner) and Paignton (Jeff Horswell) before he won again at Darlington under Liz Cartledge who also gave him his first BIS. More groups came at Belfast (Tegwyn Jones), Midland Counties (Ann Ingram) and Working and Pastoral Breeds of Scotland (Jan Rual).
His 2013 successes were at Manchester, (Steve Hall plus RBIS, Ron James), WELKS (Jeff Luscott), Bath (Meg Purnell-Carpenter), Southern Counties (Richard Kinsey, plus RBIS under Bob Gregory behind a Redwitch Akita), Blackpool (Bob Gregory), National W/P Breeds (Paul Harding) and South Wales (Andrew Brace).
A daughter gained her title and a group place in 2013 and two other progeny won CCs.

The top hound award depended on the LKA results and in the event the trophy goes to the Whippet Ch Shalfleet Simply A Lord, owned and bred by Jane Wilton-Clark by Shalfleet Simply Jazz ex Shafleet Song Of Dreams.
This affix, founded by Jane’s mother Barbara, has a long history of major awards including many champion Whippets and BIS-winning Greyhounds and more in other hound breeds; now it is back at the top.
Lord won group places during 2012, and won the group twice in 2013, under Albert Wight at WELKS and Jenny Dove at South Wales. Jane has also won a group with his daughter.

Heading the rare breeds is the Tobetan Mastiff Int/Lux Ch Chodak-Druk du Domaine de Toundra at Heronsview, owned by Richard Gardiner and bred in France by Sandra Haeffele, by Int/Fr/Lux/Bel/Swiss Ch Udaipour du Domaine de Toundra ex Quincey Strazce z Tibetu.
Since his import he has dominated the breed, and was 14 times BOB at championship shows in 2013, adding a group 4 to his list. Two of his progeny won best of sex awards.

Top imported register is the Cirneco dell’Etna Hadranensis Violetta via Kinabula, owned by Michele Farleigh and bred by Jane Moore and Domenico Tricomi by Hadranensis Remo, who took the same award in 2012, ex Eindackel Elurin di Deavanni. She won eight best import awards in 2013.
